Kenya and Tanzania in one trip

Two countries, one migration, and the border crossing nobody explains.

The Maasai Mara and the Serengeti are one ecosystem with an international border drawn through it. The animals ignore it. Visitors cannot, but crossing is easier than most people assume.

Why do both

The obvious answer is the migration — the herds spend most of the year in Tanzania and a few months in Kenya, and a trip spanning both raises your chances of being where they are. The better answer is that the two parks feel genuinely different despite being contiguous. The Serengeti is vast and open in a way that is hard to photograph and impossible to forget. The Mara is more concentrated, and its density of big cats is unmatched.

The border

You cross at Isebania by road, or fly between the two. Flying is faster and considerably less tiring; the road crossing is an experience and takes most of a day.

An East Africa Tourist Visa covers Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda but not Tanzania — that catches people out constantly. Tanzania is a separate visa, available on arrival for most nationalities. We handle the paperwork either way, but know that it is two visas rather than one.

How long you need

Ten nights is the shortest version that does not feel rushed: four in the Mara, four in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro, and a night either end for the flights. Anything under eight and you are spending a disproportionate share of it in transit.

Ngorongoro, while you are there

The crater is a two-hour detour from the Serengeti road and unlike anywhere else in Africa — a collapsed caldera twenty kilometres across with a resident population that never leaves. It is busy, it is expensive, and it is still worth doing once. Go early; the vehicles thin out by eleven.

The honest trade-off

Two countries means two sets of park fees, two visas and more flights. A single-country trip of the same length costs meaningfully less and involves less packing. If you have ten nights and have never been to East Africa, one country done well beats two done quickly — and we will say so if we think that is your situation.
